Insurance for Piano Moving
🎹 Why Piano Moves Require Expertise and Insurance
Moving a piano takes more than strength—it requires specialized care and experience. Pianos are not only heavy and delicate, but they often hold sentimental or recreational value, making professional handling essential. To ensure safe transport, hire a licensed, insured, and well-reviewed piano moving company. In California, standard coverage like Release Value Protection only reimburses $0.60 per pound, meaning a 300-pound piano would be valued at just $180—far from adequate. For better protection, Full Value Protection is recommended. Offered through third-party insurers, this coverage ensures your piano will be repaired or replaced if damaged during the move. Though it comes at an additional cost, it provides peace of mind and is well worth the investment when relocating high-value items like pianos. Choosing the right movers and insurance helps safeguard your instrument and ensures a smooth, worry-free relocation.
🛡️ Recommended Insurance Options for Piano Moves
At One Stop Moving & Storage, we research insurance providers to help our customers make informed decisions. We recommend for its competitive pricing and excellent customer service; you can visit their website or contact Trish at (973) 435-4452 for more details. Please note, we do not receive any commission or incentives for this recommendation—it’s simply a helpful starting point for those seeking extra protection. We also encourage you to review your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy to see if it includes coverage for moving valuable items like pianos. Whether you choose a third-party provider or rely on your existing policy, the goal remains the same: protect your piano and enjoy peace of mind throughout the move.

Grand / Baby Grand Pianos
As the name Grand Pianowould suggest, this is the largest of the piano types and typically are the most costly. What makes these pianos so large is that their soundboards are laid out horizontally. When you lift the top of the piano open, you will see the soundboard with the strings and hammers on the inside. A baby grand piano still has the standard 88 keys that the grand piano has, but has a smaller soundboard so the sound is not as loud.

Upright Pianos
These are the most common, as they take up less space in your house, are less expensive and are quieter and have a warmer sound (which is preferable inside smaller spaces). The space savings is in the vertical soundboard, which have strings that run down to the ground instead of across the width of the piano. The hammers in this piano utilize springs instead of gravity, which can make a difference in the sound that is produced from this instrument. Although this type of piano is typically thought of as a step down from a grand piano, some upright pianos can stretch up to 5 feet in length and rival the sound quality and be just as loud as a grand piano.

Electric Pianos
These are the most common pianos, as they are portable and affordable. An electric piano is a great starting off point when learning due to the low entry cost and is most suitable for performers that need to travel with their instruments. While the electric piano does not have the same quality of an acoustic piano (the other two types of pianos that are listed above), they have more versatility in the sounds they produce.

Piano Maintenance After the Move
🎹 Post-Move Piano Care: Why Tuning Can’t Wait
Just because your piano arrived safely doesn’t mean it’s ready to play. The physical move is only the beginning. Pianos are highly sensitive to environmental changes—humidity, temperature, and even floor leveling can affect their sound. These shifts cause the wood components to expand or contract, impacting pitch and tone. A common debate is whether to tune a piano immediately after moving or wait a few weeks. Waiting allows the wood to settle into its new environment, helping the tuning last longer. However, some experts argue that delaying tuning can make it harder to restore pitch. Either way, expect to retune your piano after a move and again if the room’s climate changes.
🛠️ Long-Term Piano Maintenance Tips
Over time, humidity fluctuations can lead to cracking or rot in a piano’s internal parts. These issues may require repairs such as key leveling or part replacement by a technician. To keep your piano in optimal condition, tune it every 4–6 months—or annually for casual players. Always retune after moving or major climate changes. Avoid placing your piano in direct sunlight, near kitchens or bathrooms, or close to exterior doors where drafts can affect its stability. Proper care ensures your piano stays in tune and lasts for generations. Let it settle, then let it sing.

What Our Clients Are Saying
Verified I'm glad I chose One Stop Moving for my emergency move! I was getting desperate because I found out that I needed to move with a weeks notice. I was so worried I wasn't going to be able to find a company who could help me with such short notice, or that I would have to settle for a subpar company. Luckily, thanks to One Stop Moving, I didn't have to settle. Their customer service was amazing, they did the best that they could to find me a spot in their schedule, and the service that they provided was 5 star. Punctual, knowleadeable, careful, and packed my stuff so well I was impressed. Not only that, I had 2 couches I wasn't sure I could take with me to my temporary location, and just hired their storage services. My office will relocate in the next month, and we are using them as well.Posted on Yaffa L.Verified These guys were great, they went above and beyond to help my parents move. I had scheduled this moving company after reaching out to a few others whom I had all given a list of items with their dimensions. 1 Stop Moving was the only reasonably priced movers, there were no extra fees or hidden fees or nonsense like that, they charge a flat reasonable fee for gas, and the hourly rate was the best quantity especially after the quality of service received. We've never had to use a moving company before we've always done it ourselves and I couldn't be happier with choosing them.Posted on Sav G.Verified These guys were awesome! I've used this company multiple times in the past and they never disappoint! They make the moving process stress free! They are fast and efficient and handled all my furniture with great care!Posted on Lehe W.Verified I recommend One Stop Moving and Storage. They were so very helpful to my needs. Great customer service's, I was stressed about moving to storage and they made it so stress free. Awesome!Posted on Tari R.
