Dedicated, shared or container
Dedicated truck, shared truck or container: which is cheaper?
To Las Vegas, Phoenix or Prescott, a dedicated truck ($4,000–$4,450) costs about the same as the shared-truck minimum of $4,400, so your own truck is the better deal. On far routes such as Texas, a shared truck at $11 per cubic foot costs less for smaller loads, but delivery can take up to 21 days.
The math: to Austin a dedicated truck is $10,200, so a shared truck costs less for any load under about 925 cubic feet ($10,200 ÷ $11). To Houston ($11,950) the break-even is about 1,085 cubic feet.
A portable container suits a pack-it-yourself move: $99 a month for the standard 8×8×5 ft box or $175 for the large 8×8×7 ft, with 25 free boxes and shipping to the lower 48 quoted upfront. Containers are steel and weather-sealed, not climate-controlled.

Is a long-distance move priced by weight or volume?
A dedicated truck is priced by destination: each city has one price, for example Phoenix is $4,200, confirmed in your written quote. A shared truck is priced by volume, $11 per cubic foot. One Stop doesn’t price by weight.

What are your rights on an interstate move?
Interstate movers answer to the federal FMCSA. You get a written estimate based on a survey (in person or by video), FMCSA’s booklet “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move”, and Full Value Protection unless you waive it in writing. One Stop is USDOT 1956864 and MC 694565.
Every interstate mover must hand you two FMCSA documents with your quote: the booklet “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” and the “Ready to Move” brochure. Read them before you sign.
Check any mover in one search: enter the USDOT number on FMCSA SAFER. Ours is 1956864. For moves inside California, One Stop holds state license CAL-190616 from the Bureau of Household Goods and Services.

What if my new home isn’t ready?
We hold your things in our climate-controlled San Diego vaults, kept at 68–72°F, and deliver when you’re ready. Short-term storage during the move is included; longer storage starts at $245 a month for a 5×10 in San Diego County. Portable containers ($99 or $175 a month) are weather-sealed but not climate-controlled.
Storage between homes
Containers are steel and weather-sealed, not climate-controlled. For furniture, wood, electronics or anything that dislikes heat, choose a vault.

How do you prepare for a long-distance move?
Book about 3 weeks ahead in summer and 10 days the rest of the year. Then declutter before the survey, photograph valuables, keep documents and medication in your car, set up utilities two weeks before delivery, and decide on Full Value Protection before move day.

Sell, donate or store what you won’t use in the new home. Less to move means a faster load and less to pack.
Make a room-by-room list
Photograph high-value pieces. It speeds up the quote and settles any damage question later.
Keep documents with you
Passports, deeds, titles, medications, jewelry and anything irreplaceable travel in your car, not on the truck.
Set up utilities early
Power, water, internet and mail forwarding at the new address, two weeks before delivery.
Pack a first-night bag
One for each person, and plan the drive for kids and pets.
Decide on protection
Ask for the Full Value Protection price, and waive it in writing only if you’re sure 60 cents per pound is enough.

What is a shuttle fee and when does it apply?
A shuttle is a smaller truck that carries your things between the moving truck and your door when the big truck can’t get close, for example on a narrow or steep street. It costs $750 and is added only when it applies. An elevator adds $350.

A deposit holds your date and comes off the total. The amount is set in your written quote, so ask for it when we send your price.
Can the survey be done by video?
Yes. Since 31 October 2022, federal rules let interstate movers survey your home by video instead of in person (49 CFR 375.401). You can waive the survey only in writing. Either way, you get the price in writing before we load.

What protection do I get if something is damaged?
Under federal rules, Full Value Protection is the default on an interstate move unless you waive it in writing. The free released-value option covers only 60 cents per pound per item. Ask for the Full Value Protection price when you get your quote.
