Moving in Encinitas

Where in Encinitas do you move people?

All five Encinitas communities: Leucadia, Old Encinitas, New Encinitas, Olivenhain and Cardiff-by-the-Sea, which has its own page. Our crews drive about 16 miles up I-5 from Sorrento Valley, roughly 22 minutes without traffic. ZIP codes: 92024, 92007.

Two-thirds of Encinitas homes are owner-occupied, and the median owner-occupied home is worth about $1.6 million. West of I-5 the homes are older and the lots small, so the plan is parking and the carry. East of I-5 it’s HOAs, and in Olivenhain it’s acreage, outbuildings and gates.

Encinitas neighborhoods

LeucadiaNorth end along Coast Highway 101. Small lots, cottages and narrow side streets; we confirm where the truck stands so nothing waits on parking.
Old EncinitasDowntown and Moonlight Beach, west of I-5. Beach traffic on summer weekends, so we book early starts.
New EncinitasEast of I-5 along El Camino Real. Tract homes and condo complexes with HOA move windows.
Encinitas RanchMaster-planned homes around the golf course. HOA approval and gate access before the truck arrives.
OlivenhainRural east side with large lots, horse properties and long private drives. Barns and tack rooms add time.
Cardiff-by-the-SeaThe south end of the city, hillside streets above the lagoon. It has its own page, linked below.

Local rules

What are the parking, container and HOA rules in Encinitas?

Encinitas code makes it unlawful to put an obstruction on a city street without a construction and encroachment permit, and limits curb or sidewalk use to the time reasonably needed to load or unload. We found no city rule for a container on a private driveway, so in Encinitas the driveway comes first.

Street obstructionsA container or anything else left on a city street needs a construction and encroachment permit (Encinitas Municipal Code 15.08.020). Source
Loading at the curbCurb and sidewalk use is limited to the time reasonably needed to load or unload. The moving truck itself loads under that rule. Source
DrivewayWe found no Encinitas rule requiring a permit for a container on a private driveway. HOA rules still apply in Encinitas Ranch and the eastern tracts.
Gated and rural lotsOlivenhain gates and long private drives need a gate code and a check on turning room. Tell us about low branches: the container delivery truck needs about 12 feet of clearance.

Drive time, explained

How is drive time billed on an Encinitas move?

Your written Not-to-Exceed price lists the drive between your two addresses with every other charge before move day. Leucadia to Olivenhain is about 12 minutes. Encinitas to Carlsbad Village is about 16 minutes.

Our crews come from Sorrento Valley, about 16 miles and 22 minutes south. That sets your arrival window, not your rate, which is the same across San Diego County.

Moves inside Encinitas often cross I-5, from the coast to the eastern neighborhoods. The table shows the drive times for common routes.

Local know-how

What else should I know before moving in Encinitas?

Plan around the marine layer and summer traffic on the coast, gates and outbuildings in Olivenhain, and HOA rules east of I-5.

May Gray and summer traffic

Coastal fog can hang on into the afternoon in May and June, and summer weekends bring beach traffic to Coast Highway 101. Book about 3 weeks ahead from May through September and ask for a weekday morning start west of I-5.

Can I store my things during an Encinitas move?

Yes. A One Stop container on your property is $99 a month (Standard, 8×8×5 ft) or $175 (Large, 8×8×7 ft), with 25 free boxes. Delivery, pickup and storage at our facility are quoted separately, in writing. Storage units in San Diego County start at $245 a month.

In Encinitas a container goes on the driveway, where we found no city permit rule; the street needs an encroachment permit. Near the coast, pack it dry: the marine layer is the storage risk here, not heat.

Questions

Encinitas moving questions

Short answers. Prices, booking, packing, storage and your rights are covered in full in our FAQ.

All moving questions
Do I need a permit for a moving container in Encinitas?

In the street, yes: Encinitas code requires a construction and encroachment permit for an obstruction on a city street. We found no city rule for a container on a private driveway, so that’s where we place it.

Can the truck load at the curb in Leucadia?

Yes, for the time it takes to load or unload, which is what Encinitas code allows at the curb. On narrow Leucadia streets we confirm the spot before move day.

How much do Encinitas movers cost?

$139 an hour for two movers and a truck, $189 for three, with 15-minute billing after that. Your written Not-to-Exceed price lists every charge before move day.

How is drive time billed on a move from Leucadia to Olivenhain?

Your written Not-to-Exceed price lists the drive between your two addresses with every other charge before move day. Leucadia to Olivenhain is about 12 minutes.

Can you move a horse property in Olivenhain?

Yes. Barns, tack rooms and workshops move with the house. Tell us what’s in the outbuildings at the estimate so we size the crew and trucks.

What does a 4-bedroom Encinitas home cost to move?

Usually 3 to 5 movers for 4 to 8 hours, $756 to $2,562 in labor. You get a written Not-to-Exceed price before move day.

Will the coastal fog damage things in a container?

Damp air is the risk near the coast. Containers are weather-sealed but not climate-controlled, so load dry items and keep the doors shut between loads. Vault storage is kept at 68–72°F.

How far is One Stop from Encinitas?
