Placement rules

San Marcos has no code section written for a temporary moving container on a private driveway. Anything placed in the street, parking lane or sidewalk needs a city encroachment permit under Chapter 14.21.

Local note

Inland North County: August highs run in the 80s °F (NOAA normals for neighboring Vista and Escondido), so plan for heat inside a closed steel box.

Built around San Marcos driveways

Start with the driveway. We checked the San Marcos municipal code for a rule on temporary moving or storage containers on private property and found none: no named permit, no day limit and no size limit. The code does prohibit freight and intermodal containers as permanent accessory structures (§20.410.040), which is about sheds, not a rental that leaves in a few weeks, and the city’s property-maintenance rules treat containers or boxes left out long-term in front yards and driveways as a violation. A month-to-month rental that you load and send away is the normal use.

The street is different. San Marcos Chapter 14.21 says no one may place a permanent or temporary encroachment in the public right-of-way without a permit, with proof of insurance and a fee set by the city’s schedule. If your container would sit in the street, the parking lane or on the sidewalk, apply to the city before delivery day; if it fits on the driveway, no city permit is involved.

Many San Marcos homes sit in master-planned communities, and the biggest is San Elijo Hills, about 3,400 homes with its own homeowners association. HOA rules, not city code, usually decide whether and how long a container can stay on the driveway, so check your CC&Rs or ask the management company before you book. The south side of the city climbs toward Double Peak, so tell us about steep or curved driveways and we confirm the spot before delivery.

Measure before you reserve. The Standard container is 5×8×8 ft with 320 cubic feet and the Large is 7×8×8 ft with 448. Leave room for the doors to open fully and look up for eaves and branches, since the delivery truck needs about 12 feet of clearance.

Summer is the other planning factor. NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals put August highs at 80.7 °F in Vista and 89.0 °F in Escondido, the stations on either side of San Marcos, and a closed steel box runs hotter inside. Keep candles, vinyl records, electronics and anything heat-sensitive out of the container, or keep them in our climate-controlled vaulted storage in Sorrento Valley, about 35 minutes away, priced by the space you use.

Students and families moving around Cal State San Marcos and Palomar College often need storage between leases. CSUSM’s fall 2026 housing move-in is August 27 and 28, so book a late-August container early. When you are done, the container can stay, go sealed to our facility or move to a new address anywhere in San Diego County for one $150 round trip, and two of our movers load it for $139 an hour (3-hour minimum) if you would rather not lift.

Questions

San Marcos portable storage, answered.

Do I need a permit for a storage container in San Marcos?

Not for a private driveway: the San Marcos municipal code has no rule or permit for a temporary moving container on private property. A container placed in the street, parking lane or sidewalk needs a city encroachment permit under Chapter 14.21, and HOA rules may also apply.

How much is a portable storage container in San Marcos?

A Standard container is $99 a month and a Large is $175 a month, with one $150 charge for delivery and pickup, a $0 deposit and 25 free moving boxes. San Marcos pays the same county-wide price.

Can I use a container around a CSUSM move-in?
