Portable storage for Vista homes, from Shadowridge to downtown

No driveway permit. Street needs one.

The short version: In Vista, One Stop Moving & Storage rents two sizes of portable storage container, month to month: a 5-foot-wide Standard (8×8×5 ft) at $99 a month and a 7-foot-wide Large (8×8×7 ft) at $175, with 25 free moving boxes either way. We quote delivery and pickup for your Vista address in writing. Vista has no permit rule for a rental on a private driveway; the street needs the City Engineer’s encroachment permit.

City rules

Do you need a permit for a portable storage container in Vista?

Not on a private driveway. We read Vista’s Development Code and Municipal Code chapters on residential zones, general provisions, temporary use permits and property maintenance and found no rule, permit or day limit for a temporary moving or storage container on private property. The street is different.

Vista Chapter 19.16 says no one may place an encroachment in, under or over any part of the public right-of-way without a written permit from the City Engineer, and the permit calls for $1 million in liability insurance. Engineering issues encroachment permits at the Development Services counter at the Civic Center. If your container fits on the driveway, none of this applies.

HOA rules sit on top of the city’s. Shadowridge, the city’s largest master-planned area, has its own specific plan and owners’ associations, so read your CC&Rs before you book; an association can limit how long a container stays even where the city doesn’t.

Can you use a storage container on a Vista construction site?

Yes, but know which rule you are under. Vista’s container rules are written for construction sites: maritime cargo containers and semi-trailers used as jobsite storage need a Minor Use Permit or a valid building permit, can stay up to 18 months, and may not sit in the right-of-way, a street setback or a fire lane (§18.58.580).

A rental container that holds your furniture while the kitchen is redone is a different use from a contractor’s cargo box, and the section doesn’t mention it. If your project has a building permit, the simplest step is to ask the inspector or the Development Services counter whether they want the container shown on the site plan, and keep it out of the setback and fire lane either way.

Size it by the rooms you are emptying, not the whole house: the Standard (320 cubic feet) or the Large (448), and the sizes guide helps you choose. Rent runs month to month, so a project that runs long costs only the extra months. When the work is done, we can take the container away or move it sealed to our facility, quoted separately in writing. Our renovation storage page covers packing a house around a project.

A Standard is 5 ft wide and a Large 7 ft wide. Both are 8 ft tall and 8 ft deep, and both sit at ground level.

Neighborhoods

What should you check in your part of Vista?

Slope in the hills, parking downtown and heat in late summer. Vista sits in hills and valleys inland from the coast, so a curved or steep driveway in Shadowridge or Vale Terrace needs a quick check, and street parking around Downtown Vista and Paseo Santa Fe can be tight.

Measure the spot first. Leave room to open both doors and look up for eaves and branches: the delivery truck needs about 30 feet of clearance and the container must sit level. Tell us about a steep or curved drive when you reserve, and we confirm the placement before delivery. Downtown, the limited curb space is one more reason to plan for the driveway.

Vista still gets warm in late summer. NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals put the August average high at 80.7 °F, and the record high is 108 °F. A container is all steel and weather resistant, but not climate-controlled, so a summer rental is fine for furniture and boxes; keep electronics, candles and anything heat-sensitive out of it, or keep them in our climate-controlled vaults at 68–72°F, from $245 a month for a 5×10 in San Diego County.

All moving questions
Do I need a permit for a storage container in Vista?

Not on a private driveway: Vista’s code has no permit or day limit for a temporary moving container on private property. A container in the public right-of-way needs a written encroachment permit from the City Engineer under Chapter 19.16, and HOA rules may apply.

Can a container go on the street in Vista?

Only with a written encroachment permit from the City Engineer, which requires $1 million in liability insurance. Most Vista deliveries go on the driveway, where no city permit is needed.

Can I use a container on a Vista construction site?

Yes. Vista’s §18.58.580 lets cargo containers used as jobsite storage stay up to 18 months with a Minor Use Permit or a valid building permit, outside the right-of-way, street setbacks and fire lanes. A rental for your furniture during a remodel isn’t named in that section, so ask Development Services if your project has a building permit.

When can you deliver a container in Vista?

Vista ZIPs 92081 to 92085 are inside our delivery area. Delivery date is set with your written quote, based on your address and our schedule. Tell us where on the lot it should go and we lock in a delivery window for you.
