Local note

East of I-805, Eastlake, Otay Ranch, Millenia and Rancho del Rey grew up as master-planned communities, so HOA rules often apply on top of the city's 30-day limit.

The 30-day rule, and how to plan around it

Chula Vista puts a clock on containers. Of the cities whose rules we checked, it is the only one with a published time limit for a container on private property. Under CVMC 19.58.445, a portable storage container in a residential zone must sit entirely within an existing driveway without blocking the sidewalk. Only one is allowed per lot, it can stay no more than 30 consecutive calendar days, and the same lot can host a container for no more than 90 days in a calendar year.

Thirty days is plenty for most moves. You load over a couple of weekends, we collect the container, and it goes to your new address or to our facility in Sorrento Valley for one $150 round trip, the same charge as delivery. The trouble starts with anything open-ended: a remodel that runs past a month, a house sale that slips, or a gap between leases that nobody can date yet.

For those, decide on day one where the container will spend day 31. We can collect it sealed before the 30 days are up and keep it at our facility, then bring it back when the work is finished. That move is not part of the $150 delivery and pickup price: taking it to our facility and bringing it back is one $150 round trip, and the container keeps its monthly rate while it sits there. Bringing it back does not reset the city's count, either. The 90-day yearly cap still applies to your lot, so a long project is usually better planned as facility storage from the start.

If your belongings do not need to sit in a container at all, our climate-controlled vaulted storage keeps them at our facility for $225 a month. Compare on-site and facility storage before you pick one.

East of I-805, the city's rules are often only half the answer. Eastlake, Otay Ranch, Millenia and Rancho del Rey were built as master-planned communities, and Otay Ranch alone covers 23,000 acres. An association there can set rules of its own on driveway containers, so read your CC&Rs before you reserve, and follow whichever limit is stricter.

In Castle Park, Montgomery and the rest of western Chula Vista, look at the driveway first. The street is an option only if the property has no driveway at all, and then only with a temporary encroachment permit approved by the City Engineer, for no more than 14 days. The code's standards also refer to encroachment permit approval by the City Engineer for container use generally, so if you are unsure whether that applies to your driveway, ask the city before delivery day. Bonita addresses are unincorporated county land, so this city section does not govern them.

The Standard container is 5×8×8 ft, with 320 cubic feet to fill, and the Large is 7×8×8 ft, with 448. With a one-per-lot rule, choosing the right size matters more than usual, because a second container is not an option. Our facility is about 27 minutes away without traffic.

Questions

Chula Vista portable storage, answered.

How long can a storage container stay in a Chula Vista driveway?

No more than 30 consecutive calendar days, under Chula Vista Municipal Code 19.58.445. The same lot can also host a container for no more than 90 days in a calendar year, and only one container is allowed per lot. It must sit entirely within the driveway without blocking the sidewalk.

How much is a portable storage container in Chula Vista?

A Standard container costs $99 a month in Chula Vista and a Large costs $175, the same rates as the rest of San Diego County. Delivery and pickup are one $150 charge per rental, with no deposit. Moving the container to our facility or a new address is one $150 round trip, billed like delivery.

Can I put a container on the street in Chula Vista?

Only if your property has no driveway. In that case the city allows a portable storage container in the public right-of-way with a temporary encroachment permit approved by the City Engineer, and it can stay no more than 14 consecutive days. Homes with a driveway must use the driveway.

What if I need storage for longer than 30 days in Chula Vista?

Plan for our facility. Before day 30 we collect the container sealed and keep it there, then return it when you are ready; that is one $150 round trip. The city also caps a lot at 90 container days a year, so long projects often suit our climate-controlled vaulted storage from the start.
