City rules

Where does a portable storage container go in Coronado?

On private property whenever there is room. The city’s written procedure says storage containers “shall be placed on private property if possible”, and it doesn’t issue right-of-way permits when your lot has adequate space, so a driveway or side yard comes first.

If the street really is the only option, Coronado Municipal Code §52.04.010 requires a Right-of-Way Permit from Public Services & Engineering (1825 Strand Way, (619) 522-7383). The conditions are specific: no more than 7 calendar days, no more than 20 feet of curb, within 8 feet of the curb face, reflective markings or a lighted barricade, next to your own property, never in a red, blue or yellow zone, and No-Parking/Tow-Away signs posted at least 72 hours before delivery.

The resident names the city as additional insured ($1 million per occurrence). You apply at City Hall or by email to engineeringpermits@coronado.ca.us with a photo of the spot showing the container’s dimensions, and the permit number and dates go on the container. The city’s engineering fee schedule has no separate line for containers, so ask Public Services & Engineering what the permit costs, and call us before you book a street placement so we can confirm it works.

One more local rule: city code keeps trucks over three tons on signed truck routes, except on the direct route to a pickup or delivery. Coronado connects to the mainland by the San Diego–Coronado Bridge and by State Route 75 along the Silver Strand.

Navy households

Can a container help with a PCS move from Naval Base Coronado?

Yes. A container can hold your household while you wait for housing, or it can be the moving method in a personally procured move (PPM). Naval Base Coronado, whose eight installations include NAS North Island and Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, employs more than 36,000 military and civilian personnel.

The Defense Department lists renting a portable storage container as one way to do a PPM. Storage is reimbursable for up to 90 days and not above the Government Constructed Cost, and you need weight tickets, the storage contract and paid-in-full receipts to claim it. Get approval from your transportation office before anything moves.

Containers rent month to month, so a container can wait on your property, or sealed at our facility, while orders and housing dates settle. Active-duty and veteran households can ask about our military discount.

Neighborhoods

What if you live in Coronado Shores or the Cays?

Then plan around the building or the HOA. The condo towers at Coronado Shores often have no spot a container can use, and Cays homes sit inside an association with its own rules, so a container at home may not work; storage at our facility is the fallback.

Village and Country Club

Houses with a driveway or side yard: measure the spot, leave room for both doors to open, and look up for branches. Start with the driveway.

Coronado Shores

High-rise condos: ask the building manager first. If there is no spot on the property, the city only permits the street for up to 7 days, so our climate-controlled vaults are often simpler.

Coronado Cays and Silver Strand

Homes inside an association: read the CC&Rs before you reserve. Where the HOA and the city both set a limit, follow the stricter one.

Marine air

Temperatures typically run 50–77°F and muggy days peak in August, and the coastal marine layer can stay for days or weeks (NOAA). The container is steel and weather resistant but not climate-controlled, so pack dry items only and keep upholstery off the walls.

How it works

How does a Coronado delivery work?

Spot first, permit only if you must, then load.

1

Find a spot on your property

Measure the driveway or side yard and check overhead clearance. If only the street works, call us before you apply for a Right-of-Way Permit.

2

Reserve and set the date

Reserve below or call (858) 633-8600. A street placement needs the city permit and signs posted 72 hours before delivery, so we set the date with you.

3

Keep it, store it or move it

When you finish, call to schedule pickup. The container can stay, go to our facility or move to a new address in San Diego County, each quoted separately, in writing.

What it costs

What does container storage cost in Coronado?

Rent in Coronado is the county rate: $99 a month for a Standard or $175 for a Large, with delivery and pickup quoted in writing for your address. See container prices, line by line.

If you need the street, any city permit fee is the city’s and separate.

All moving questions
Can a storage container go on the street in Coronado?

Only with a Right-of-Way Permit, and only when there is no adequate space on private property. Coronado limits street placements to 7 calendar days and 20 feet of curb, and requires No-Parking signs posted 72 hours before delivery.

What if my Coronado home has no room for a container?

Use our climate-controlled vaults instead. Our crew picks up your belongings, keeps them at 68–72°F and brings them back when you are ready, with no container on your property. Vault storage starts at $245 a month for a 5×10 in San Diego County, and visits are by appointment.

Do you offer mobile storage in Coronado?

Yes. Mobile storage, portable storage and storage pods are names for the same service: we deliver a steel container to your Coronado property, you load it, and it stays, goes to our facility or moves to a new address. Rent is $99 or $175 a month; delivery and pickup are quoted in writing.

Can I use a container for a PCS move from Naval Base Coronado?

Yes, as a personally procured move. The Defense Department lists renting a portable storage container as a PPM method, with storage reimbursable for up to 90 days, capped at the Government Constructed Cost, if you keep weight tickets, the storage contract and paid-in-full receipts. Get approval from your transportation office first.

What if I live in a Coronado Shores or Cays condo with no driveway?

Ask your HOA or building manager first; many condo buildings have no spot a container can use, and the city only permits the street when private property has no room, for up to 7 days. Often the simpler plan is our climate-controlled vaults: we pick up, store and return your things.
