The Defense Department lists renting a portable storage container as one way to do a personally procured move. Get approval first, keep the paperwork the Navy asks for, and plan around the 90-day storage limit.
If you are doing a personally procured move (a PPM, once called a DITY move), a portable container is not a workaround. The Military OneSource fact sheet on PPMs, dated March 2026, lists "Rent portable moving and storage containers" as one of the ways to do it.
Approval comes first. The fact sheet puts it plainly: "Before moving, you must have your official orders and get approval from your TO." The TO is your installation transportation office (TMO/PPPO/DMO), and the counseling appointment there produces your PPM Checklist and Expense Certification form in the Defense Personal Property System. Book that appointment before you book a container.
The money works differently from a move the government arranges. When you choose a PPM, the fact sheet says you "will be paid 100% of the Government Constructed Cost (GCC)", the amount the government would have paid a government-provided company for the same move and storage. It comes as a single payment, and you keep what you do not spend, minus taxes. The final figure follows the actual weight you move, verified with weight tickets, up to your authorized weight entitlement.
Our part is the container. The Standard 1-Box is 5×8×8 ft with 320 cubic feet, and the Large is 7×8×8 ft with 448. We deliver to your address in San Diego County, you load it over as many evenings as checkout allows, and with 24 hours' notice we collect it for our Sorrento Valley facility or your next address in the county. The move to our facility and back is one $150 round trip, and the container keeps its monthly rate there. We do not move containers outside the county, and we have not confirmed delivery inside any installation's gates, so plan on an off-base address.
Take your orders to your installation transportation office (TMO/PPPO/DMO) and get the PPM approved before anything moves. Keep the checklist and expense certification from counseling with your move paperwork.
Get certified empty and full weight tickets for each segment of the move. The Navy wants each ticket to show your name, the last five digits of your SSN and the weigh master's signature. We do not provide weight tickets.
Keep your storage agreement and a paid-in-full receipt for each completed month; the Navy does not reimburse prepaid months. When the container leaves storage, keep the pickup confirmation as proof the property was removed.
PPM storage has a ceiling on time and on money. The fact sheet says service members are authorized 90 days of temporary storage, or 60 days for DoW civilians, "not to exceed the Government Constructed Cost", and that weight tickets, storage contracts and receipts are required.
An extension is possible but not routine. The Navy lets members ask for up to 90 more days by contacting the responsible Personal Property Office with a copy of their orders and a completed DD Form 1857, and it says all requests are being scrutinized carefully. Requests for convenience, such as waiting for a house to be built or having chosen smaller housing, will not be approved. A claim for storage past the first 90 days has to include the DD Form 1857 showing that approval.
A 1-Box rents month to month, so you can keep it longer if the next house is not ready. Anything past your authorized storage period is at your own cost, though. When you book, tell us your report date and the day your storage authorization ends, and we will plan the pickup with both in mind.
