The 15-day rule

What does Del Mar’s 15-day rule say?

Section 30.86.180 of the Del Mar Municipal Code treats a portable storage container as a temporary storage unit. One may sit on a property up to four times a year, for no more than 15 consecutive days each time and no more than 60 days in a calendar year, even on private property.

The same section caps size: one unit, or several together, can be no larger than 10 feet wide, 10 feet high and 20 feet long. Our Standard (8×8×5 ft, 320 cubic feet) and Large (8×8×7 ft, 448 cubic feet) each fit inside that limit on their own.

There are two exceptions. The limits don’t apply to a unit inside an enclosed yard that is screened from view from the street, and the Design Review Board or City Council can approve a longer stay.

Outside those exceptions, a container can’t sit on a steep slope, in wetlands or other sensitive habitat, or where it blocks the view or path of drivers, cyclists or pedestrians on the street next to it. That last line matters on corner lots and short driveways, so tell us where you plan to put it.

Two-part plan

How do you plan a Del Mar rental around 15 days?

In two parts. Load at home inside the 15 days, then we collect the container and keep it sealed at our facility until you need it back. Storage at our facility and each trip are quoted in writing before you book.

A typical sequence: we deliver on day one, you load over two weekends, and we collect the container before day 15. When the new house is ready or the remodel is done, we bring it back, or take it to any other address in San Diego County.

Each return to your property is another stay under the rule, and Del Mar allows four a year and 60 days in total. If your project will need the container at home more often than that, plan the timeline with us before the first delivery.

Del Mar is a small beach city of about 3,950 residents (2020 census), and the Del Mar Fairgrounds host the San Diego County Fair and summer horse racing. Those events bring heavy traffic, so check the Fairgrounds event calendar before you choose a delivery date.

Street and driveway

Can a container go on a Del Mar street or a steep driveway?

The street needs a city Encroachment Permit, and a steep slope is off-limits under the 15-day section. Most Del Mar placements start on a level part of the driveway.

The street

Under Chapter 23.28, Del Mar treats a short-term item in the public right-of-way, such as a dumpster, as a Minor Encroachment that needs an Encroachment Permit from the Planning Department. The city sets its own fees in its current fee schedule.

Traffic control plan

The city’s applicant guide asks for a traffic control plan stamped by a civil or traffic engineer for work in the right-of-way, with exceptions possible on low-volume streets. Containers aren’t named in Chapter 23.28, so confirm the permit type with the city first.

The driveway

Tell us when you book if it is short, steep or shared, or if branches or wires hang low. The delivery truck needs about 30 feet of clearance and the container must sit level, so we confirm the spot before delivery day.

HOAs and loading help

If your home is in an HOA, check its rules as well and follow the stricter limit. If you would rather not lift, two of our movers can load it, quoted separately in writing.

All moving questions
How long can a storage container stay at my house in Del Mar?

Up to 15 days in a row. Del Mar Municipal Code 30.86.180 allows a temporary storage unit on a property up to four times a year, for no more than 15 consecutive days each time and 60 days in a calendar year. A unit in an enclosed yard screened from the street is exempt.

Can a container go on the street in Del Mar?

Only with a city Encroachment Permit under Chapter 23.28, which treats short-term items such as dumpsters as Minor Encroachments. The city sets its own permit fees, and Chapter 23.28 doesn’t name containers, so confirm the permit type and fee with the Planning Department before you plan on a street spot.

Before the 15 days are up, call to schedule pickup. We collect the container and keep it at our facility, or take it to your next address anywhere in San Diego County, each quoted separately in writing. If it comes back to your Del Mar home later, that counts as another of the four stays allowed each year.

No. We rent portable steel storage containers, 8×8×5 ft or 8×8×7 ft, that load at ground level and fit inside Del Mar’s size limit for temporary storage units. If you are moving out of state, we can ship a loaded container to the 48 continental states, quoted in writing.
