Portable storage containers in La Jolla, planned around tight streets

A steel container on your La Jolla driveway, about 15 minutes from our Sorrento Valley office. Where there is no room off the street, we plan the delivery around the City of San Diego's one-week street permit. These containers are rented, delivered and loaded by One Stop Moving & Storage, a licensed San Diego mover at 6260 Marindustry Dr STE B, San Diego, CA 92121. Call (858) 633-8600.

Placement rules

La Jolla follows City of San Diego rules. A container in the street or on the sidewalk needs a Traffic Control Permit: $87.68 a week plus an $87.68 processing fee, for up to 7 days. We found no city rule requiring a permit on a private driveway.

Local note

La Jolla is a community of the City of San Diego, not a separate city. Its own ZIP code is why addresses read "La Jolla, CA". UCSD and Scripps are not under city jurisdiction.

Narrow roads, sloped lots, one permitted week

Start with who sets the rules. La Jolla has its own ZIP code, 92037, so mail is addressed to "La Jolla, CA", but it is part of the City of San Diego and there is no separate La Jolla city hall to ask. A container here follows the same city rules as one in Rancho Bernardo. The exception is campus land: the city notes that UCSD and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography are outside its jurisdiction, so if you live in campus housing, ask the university first.

The driveway is the simple case. We found no City of San Diego rule requiring a permit for a container on a private driveway. Fitting one is the harder part. The city describes La Jolla as ocean bluffs, steep canyons and hillsides rising to Mount Soledad. Many of its roads are narrow, too. The container has to sit level and the delivery truck needs roughly 12 feet of vertical clearance, so tell us how your driveway slopes, how much room there is at the curb, and what hangs overhead. We confirm the spot before delivery day. A Standard container is 5×8×8 ft with 320 cubic feet inside and a Large is 7×8×8 ft with 448; when space is tight, the Standard's smaller footprint may be the one that fits.

If nothing fits off the street, the container needs a city Traffic Control Permit before it goes in the street or on the sidewalk. You apply with form DS-269 and a traffic control plan that shows the street and parking lane widths, the distance to the nearest driveways, any parking meters and any painted curb, with at least three working days' notice. The fee is $87.68 a week plus a flat $87.68 processing fee, and $20 per meter per day if the container takes a metered space. The permit holder posts Tow-Away/No Parking signs 72 hours before delivery, and the container cannot sit in front of a red, white or blue curb.

That permit lasts up to 7 days. An extension needs the City Engineer's approval, costs more and has to be requested at least 5 working days before the permit runs out. In practice a street placement in La Jolla works best as a short, planned load: two of our movers can fill it, and we then take it sealed to our facility, each quoted separately in writing. A move to a new address anywhere in San Diego County is quoted in writing for that address.

Two more checks. If your home is in an HOA, read the CC&Rs too, and where the association and the city both set limits, follow the stricter one. And close to the water, pack dry: the container is weather sealed but not climate controlled. Documents, photographs and instruments are better kept in our climate-controlled vaulted storage, from $245 a month for a 5×10 in San Diego County.

How a La Jolla delivery works

  1. 01

Describe the street and the spot

Reserve online or call (858) 633-8600. Tell us the driveway slope, the curb space and any overhead wires or branches, and we confirm where the container can sit level.

  2. 02

    Driveway, or a permitted week

On a driveway, rent month to month with no minimum. In the street, apply for the city permit at least three working days ahead and we set the delivery and pickup dates inside its 7 days.

  3. 03

Keep it, store it or move it

With 24 hours' notice we collect it for our facility or take it to another address in San Diego County. Our facility or another address is quoted separately, in writing.

Questions

La Jolla portable storage, answered.

Do I need a permit for a storage container in La Jolla?

Not on your own driveway, as far as we can find. La Jolla is part of the City of San Diego, and we found no city rule requiring a permit for a container on a private driveway. The street or sidewalk needs a city Traffic Control Permit: $87.68 a week plus an $87.68 processing fee, valid for up to 7 days.

How much is a portable storage container in La Jolla?

A Standard container is $99 a month and a Large is $175, the same rates as the rest of San Diego County. Delivery and pickup are quoted in writing for your address, and 25 moving boxes are included. Two movers can load it, quoted separately in writing.

My La Jolla street is narrow and the driveway is steep. Can a container still work?

It depends on the spot, so we confirm it before delivery day rather than guessing from the address. The container has to sit level and the truck needs about 12 feet of vertical clearance. If nothing fits off the street, a short permitted week, a fast load and storage at our facility is the plan we suggest.
