Rancho Bernardo is inside the City of San Diego. Street or sidewalk placement needs a Traffic Control Permit (Information Bulletin 718). We found no city rule requiring a permit for a container on a private driveway.
City sourceRancho Bernardo is a master-planned community with neighborhood associations and 55+ communities such as Seven Oaks and Oaks North, so check your HOA's rules before delivery.
SourceRancho Bernardo was built as a master-planned community, and the City of San Diego describes private parks and clubs for each neighborhood. Many of those neighborhoods have their own association, from Westwood and Bernardo Heights to 55+ communities such as Seven Oaks and Oaks North. Association rules are not city law, but they can still decide whether a container may sit on your driveway and for how long.
So check before you reserve. Read your CC&Rs and any architectural or parking rules, or send one email to your management company asking whether a portable storage container is allowed on the driveway and for how many days. It is far easier to have that answer before delivery day than after.
The city side is straightforward. Rancho Bernardo is the northernmost residential community in the City of San Diego, so San Diego's rules apply. We found no city rule requiring a permit for a container on a private driveway. The street is different. Under Information Bulletin 718, a container on a street or sidewalk needs a Traffic Control Permit from Development Services, applied for with Form DS-269 and a traffic control plan. The permit costs $87.68 a week, plus a flat $87.68 processing fee, and lasts one week at most; an extension needs the City Engineer's approval and must be filed 5 working days before the permit expires. Apply at least 3 working days ahead, and post Tow-Away/No Parking signs 72 hours before the container arrives.
That one-week limit shapes the whole plan. A driveway container can stay month to month while you pack a room at a time. A street container has to be loaded and collected inside the permit window, and pickup needs 24 hours' notice, so book it a day or two before the permit runs out.
A Standard 1-Box is 5×8×8 ft with 320 cubic feet inside, and a Large is 7×8×8 ft with 448 cubic feet. Both load at ground level. If you are downsizing and would rather not carry furniture, two of our movers load it for $139 an hour, with a 3-hour minimum. Afterwards the container can stay, come back sealed to our facility in Sorrento Valley, or go to a new address anywhere in San Diego County. A move is one $150 round trip, the same charge as delivery, and a container kept at our facility stays on its monthly rate.
Read your CC&Rs or ask your management company whether a container may sit on the driveway, and for how long.
Reserve online or call (858) 633-8600. If the street is your only option, apply for the city's Traffic Control Permit at least 3 working days ahead.
Give us 24 hours' notice and we collect it for our facility or deliver it to another address in San Diego County. A move is one $150 round trip, the same charge as delivery; stored with us, the container keeps its monthly rate.
